Sintra Portugal

Sintra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its 19th century Romantic architecture, which Lord Byron described as being the most beautiful in the world. Sintra has become a major tourist attraction, with many day-trippers visiting from nearby Lisbon. Attractions include the fabulous Pena Palace(19th c.) and the Castelo dos Mouros (reconstructed 19th c.) with a breath-taking view of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, and the summer residence of the kings of Portugal Palácio Nacional de Sintra (largely 15th/16th c.), in the town itself. The Sintra Mountain Range, one of the largest parks in the Lisbon area, (Serra de Sintra) is also a major tourist attraction.

Cultural Landscape of Sintra, Portugal

Sintra lies in the splendid coastal landscape of western Portugal just north of Lisbon. Numerous kings and other aristocrats built their summer retreats in this miniature paradise. In the 19th century Sintra became the first centre of European Romantic architecture. Palácio Real, Sintra National Palace, was built on the remains of a Moorish castle. The Moors, who ruled here for centuries, were finally driven away from their paradise by King Alfons Henriques in 1147. The palace was built in the late 15th century to serve as summer accommodation for many a prince and ruler, who all had one thing in common: eternal glory. The palace rooms can be visited but conditions are strict. The armoury (Sala dos Brasões), the room with the Moorish tiles, the magpie room (Sala das Pegas), the swan room (Sala dos Cisnes), the bathhouse and many more beautiful things are visited annually by hundreds of thousands of tourists and culture lovers.Officially designated by UNESCO as "World Heritage Site", this site is to be safeguarded for the future as a testimony to its enduring past. The 26-part tv-series "HERITAGE SITES of the WORLD" is available in Dutch and English.
